You can show off your gear by adding your photo to the Zodiacs Around The World group pool and tagging it with whatsinyourbag and whatsinmybag. If you aren't a Flickr member, you can sign up for a free account, or you can send me your photos and I'll add them to the group pool.

Site Update: Hiatus and New Contest (Updated)

It seems like ages since my last update or post to Zodiacs Around The World, so I apologize to those of you who visit on a regular basis. I've been extremely busy and recently went on a much-needed old-world vacation with my wife for two weeks of R&R. My Zodiac tagged along with us to our far-away destination, so keep an eye out for a new addition to the Zodiacs Around the World photo gallery. Some of you might recognize a certain famous landmark from a certain Russell Crowe movie.

If you're a Zodiac owner and you'd like to see this site updated with frequent additions, I need your help. Please submit your photos to help keep this site alive and updated on a regular basis!

Here's a little motivation for you in case you need a reason to take out your Zodiac and digital camera and snap some shots...

1. Take some Zodiacs Around The World themed photos. Please see the submission guidelines.
2. Sign up for a free Flickr! account if you aren't a current Flickr! member.
3. Join the Zodiacs Around The World Group.
4. Send your photo(s) to the group.
5. Send me an email naming the now-obvious landmark depicted in my travel photo as seen above.

Send as many photos as you like to the group pool. You only get one guess per person, so please play fair (no multiple Flickr! accounts, please). The first two people who do all of the above and name the landmark correctly will get a free upgrade to a Flickr! Pro account for one year, courtesy of me and the kind folks at Flickr. The two winners as well as the next three runners-up will receive a free Metal Styli Zodiac Bolt Stylus, which are no longer made.

The new contest deadline is 11:59PM EDT on Sunday, June 26, 2005.

Good Luck!

Seventy-nine years ago today, Dr. Robert Goddard successfully launched the world's first liquid-fuel powered rocket in Auburn, Massachusetts, USA. More photos in this set.

To all you Zodiac-owning history buffs out there: The "On This Day" category is meant to show your Zodiac combined with history. Photos and a summary of the historical event will be featured on the anniversary date. Please submit "On This Day" themed photos at least 48 hours in advance.

There is a lot of history in the books, quite a number of Zodiac owners around the world, and 365 days in a year. Get to work!

First Photo Contest Winners

Updated 3/15/05 - See Below

The wait is over. It's time to announce the results of the first photo contest. From as far west as Seattle and east to Qatar, all of the submissions were great photos that captured the spirit of Zodiac owners around the world. Alas, I could only choose the top three submissions as prize winners and the judging was difficult. If your name isn't mentioned, please read on for a special announcement.

So after much deliberation, and without further ado, the winners are:

1st Place - Layne Harris for New York City!
Titan Class World 5 in 1
Resco Photo Viewer
Resco Explorer
GPS Pilot Compass

2nd Place - Chris B. for The Right Stuff
Titan Class World
Resco Photo Viewer
GPS Pilot Compass

3rd Place - Don S. for Rocky Mountain High
Titan Converter
Resco Photo Viewer

Congratulations! I'll be in touch with you shortly for prize fulfillment.

I have some good news for everyone else. Resco and GPS Pilot were kind enough to provide discount codes for their products. Resco has provided a 20% off discount code for Resco Photo Viewer and Resco Explorer, valid through April 15, 2005 at Handango. Update: GPS Pilot has provided $5 USD off of GPS Pilot Compass for the first 15 Zodiac users. You can redeem the discounts by using the following links (disclaimer- these are not affiliate links):

20% Off Resco Photo Viewer

20% Off Resco Explorer

Update: $5 Off GPS Pilot Compass Enter the discount code ZATWCONTEST in the discount code box and hit "Calculate Total" before your order goes through.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. Because of your submissions, the Zodiacs Around The World Gallery is filling up with great photos. Please keep them coming.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to the very kind and generous folks at Class Action, GPS Pilot, and Resco. Without their prize donations, this contest would not have been possible.

Put Yourself On The Map

worldmap

Those map links on the right side of the page are a great way to see where Zodiac users are located around the world. When a photo is submitted, the location is geocoded to get latitude and longitude information, pinpointing each photo with a red dot on Mikel Maron's Flickr photo mapping service, Mapping Flickr. For photos submitted in the U.S., tags are used describing the location and Mappr does the rest. These maps are interactive: You can pan, zoom in, and click on individual photos for thumbnail views and more details.

If you're the first person to submit a photo from a country, you'll put that country's flag in the "Photos By Country" section where photos are grouped using tags in Flickr. If you don't see your flag displayed, show some national pride and make a submission! If your country's flag is already flying, post a photo to add your country's group and the worldwide group of Zodiac Users.

It's time to put yourself on the map. Send in your photos and please provide a location including a street intersection, city, state, zip code and country, or actual coordinates if you have them. If you aren't comfortable giving an exact location, please feel free to use the largest nearby city or town instead. Doing so will put your photos on the maps and show the world that Zodiac users are everywhere.
